Being in a Catholic school that sensors its student press, it is very hard/almost impossible to run and story about controversial issues, especially political ones. To write an article about students voting in the upcoming election I had to advocate its importance to the Dean of Students and get the idea and boundaries approved. I was thoughtful when selecting my interviewees and I can say this is a story I am very proud of. Though I cannot write about local or national issues in my student paper, being able to even address that an election happened was a huge win for the journalism department. Making sure news is up-to-date and informative on a wide variety of student activities is crucial when reporting on an entire student body. I wrote this article within a day of finding out the results of the Debate regional competition to inform others about their success. Being persistent and getting intentional interviews about the event is difficult on such a tight deadline but it can be rewarding to get people’s excited reactions right after it happens.
