As I sketch out page designs with the Design Editor we come up with ideas and develop plans and deadlines for the future.

Design

As editor-in-chief, I expect myself to be proficient in Indesign by being able to help design print pages and web story covers. Though this was quite the learning curve because I never took a design class, I watched designers and many YouTube videos to better understand the process. At the beginning of every issue, I sit down with each of the designers to plan out what the pages will look like and sketch out a mockup. The designs of an issue are one of the most important details because they are what students see first and what draws them in to read a article.

Completing my first ever newspaper as the Print Editor-in-Chief is probably the hardest I have ever worked. Last year’s issues were only 20 pages so making the jump to 28 required a lot of extra time, especially with a less experienced staff. Leading up to the issue’s deadline I put in 40-hour weeks to ensure everything was thoroughly edited and looked excellent. The increase in pages means more designs and I had to become an expert at Indesign and by the end was teaching designers how to do things. Click here to check out this Issue.

Going into the second issue of the year we were on a very tight deadline of about a month. This print edition was a test of my sanity as the deadline was a week before finals. I had to learn to delegate more responsibility to staff members and work quickly and efficiently. I had to take on a designer’s role to finish on time working closely with our design editor to make sure everything looked good. Click here to check out this Issue.

Having a completely new staff, during the start of this issue we developed our design systems, templates, and fonts. We condensed many pages to limit the white space and increase organization. Click here to check out our Valentine Issue.

Even though print was not my main focus last year I helped design several pages and put stories, pictures, and graphics on most of them. Some spreads even won KSPA monthly contests.

I made this post last minute due to copyright concerns on an image from the movie’s premiere. This was posted on Instagram and Facebook along with a summary of what the story was about.

I designed this for a story I co-wrote about whether or not “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carrey is overplayed. This was the first web post I had ever designed so it took me a while but it grew my confidence that I could continue to improve. A design being the first thing you see, it entices the reader to click on the story. This is one of the most viewed articles on the web with 220 views.

Service Name

This design was for a timely web post and also put on BMPress’s Instagram and Facebook to draw people to read the story. I used a very simple layout that told the reader the common themes of the retreat. This shows a design does not need to be overly complex for the web and sometimes just needs to inform. Though this is not the best design, I am proud of the progress I have made.
